Weight: 21.60 ounces
Materials: Bamboo, carbon, nylon, and spandex with 4-way stretch; ballistic nylon reinforcement with stretch
These shorts combine eco materials with solid sailing short basics to make a pair of shorts that's as easy on your rear as it is on the environment. I wore a pair of these on a J22 during the Annapolis NOODs to get a feel for them and overall I was impressed. For me, the most noticeable feature was the great stretch offered by the spandex blended into the fabric.
The Harken ballistic shorts come with foam pads already inserted which is a plus compare to Camets where you have to buy them separately. They did make the toe rail a bit more comfortable over the three days of sailing I did. [They are also] the only shorts we have that feature two rear pockets separate from the pockets for the pads. I don't really think you'd want to use the pockets while sailing since they're pretty guaranteed to get both wet and smooshed but they're very useful once you make your way to the beer tent. APS The Emperor's New Shorts These stretch, gusseted, reinforced, and durable shorts are hands down the best pair of sailing shorts that I've used in my 32-year sailing career. These optionally padded shorts allow such easy movement that the emperor himself may feel restricted in his fabled garb. Harken chose a fantastic, quick-drying material that allows you to catch a direct hit by a wave and be dry and comfortable again within minutes. I'm a tough critic of sailing apparel. I want clothing that moves as quickly as I do. Clothing that feels like it's not there at all, but clothing that's also appropriate for après sailing bar sessions, award ceremonies, and even a casual dinner or two. Harken's Sailing Shorts fit this bill perfectly, as they are athletic but fairly subtle. Trust me, you'll go far to find a better pair of sailing shorts than Harken's newest offering. SAIL Magazine |
